European disunion done right

The Economist has a nice article (European disunion done right: The “old empire” offers surprising lessons for the European Union today) that compares the EU with the Habsburg empire. Starting in 1653 it had a rather similar structure to the EU. It lasted until 1806. Although Napoleons conquests ended it, previously it had been weakened by Germany becoming too prominent.
